The UK economy has come out of recession, growing 0.4% in the last three months 09

Dated: 26th January 2010, Updated 30th March 2010

The UK out of the longest recession in recorded history

The UK's exit from recession will be welcomed by the Government as a sign that things are finally on the mend.

Britain is being reported as finally out of recession with 0.4% growth reported in the last 3 months of 2009.

The economy has contracted for six consecutive quarters, so any recovery is expected to be painfully slow, according to analysts.

This has been Britain's worst economic downturn since 1921 and while we took a little longer to escape the grip over some European countries our contraction was a little less than the likes of Germany.

The economy had previously contracted for six consecutive quarters - the longest period since quarterly figures were first recorded in 1955.

There have been recent recovery signs - last week, UK unemployment fell for the first time in 18 months. Homeowners are also bracing themselves for expected rises in interest rates which are currently sitting at a record low of 0.5 per cent.
